Has PlayStation Suspended PC Plans?
Valve’s Steam Machine, announced last week, has sparked a new debate in the industry by offering PC games a console-like experience: “Is exclusive games really necessary anymore?” It appears Sony may have found its own answer to this question. Recent claims suggest the company is planning to slow down the PC rollout and lock PlayStation exclusives back into its platform.
Is PlayStation Holding Back PC Rollout?
WindowsCentral Editor-in-Chief Jez Corden, citing information he claims to have obtained from a reliable source, claims Sony has suspended its PC plans. According to Corden, “PlayStation’s PC releases haven’t had the impact they expected.” This situation is said to have weakened Sony’s confidence in its future PC projects.
Corden also claimed that multiplayer live service games like Helldivers 2 could still be available on PC, but that major single-player games like Ghost of Yotei would no longer be coming to the platform. Even if they were, it would be “a few years from now at the earliest.”
However, in another statement a few days ago, Corden stated that “simultaneous PlayStation and PC releases are on the way.” This makes the credibility of these claims questionable. Furthermore, he had previously dismissed reports of Xbox games coming to PlayStation as “fan rumors,” but today, with the PS5 releases of Gears of War and the upcoming Halo, these claims have come true.
All these developments make it unclear what PlayStation’s future strategy will be. If the claims are true, Sony may be returning to the “exclusive game” concept. However, with the proliferation of next-generation hybrid systems like the Steam Machine, the sustainability of this approach is a major question mark. The picture for the gaming world is clear: the boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred. And perhaps the concept of “exclusive game” may be a thing of the past in the next generation.
