Henry Cavill’s Voltron Movie is Coming Directly to Digital
The long-awaited release schedule for Henry Cavill’s Voltron film has been finalized. Amazon MGM Studios has announced that the live-action adaptation will not be released in theaters and will instead be released directly on a digital platform. The film will be available on Prime Video or the MGM+ channel. The move of Voltron, known for its giant robots and nostalgic atmosphere, to digital platforms instead of the big screen is somewhat disappointing, especially for fans who wanted to see the series in theaters.
Henry Cavill’s Voltron Film Heads to Prime Video
Besides Henry Cavill, the cast includes Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, and Nathan Jones. The actors’ roles have not been officially announced. However, according to rumors, Cavill may play the warrior King Alfur, while Sterling K. Brown may portray the villain Zarkon.
The story details of Voltron are largely being kept under wraps for now. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber previously stated that he wanted the film to remain true to the heart and spirit of Voltron. Accordingly, the production will introduce a new generation of pilots and reinterpret Voltron for a live-action universe.
The project is based on the Japanese science fiction films Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, which were later adapted and released as Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The story generally focuses on young pilots using five robotic lions to form Voltron to protect the universe.
Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for Red Notice, is directing the film. The screenplay was also written by Thurber and Ellen Shanman. A release date has not yet been announced. However, the unveiling of the official logo and the announcement of a digital release plan indicate that Voltron is now more seriously approaching its promotional process.
