id Software Breaks Silence on Layoffs

id Software was one of the studios most affected by the widespread layoffs at Xbox. The long-established developer, known for the DOOM series, has made its first official statement regarding its current situation after days of rumors and discussions. The studio stated that despite the losses, it has enough staff to continue developing new games and technologies.

id Software Continues After Layoffs

According to the information released, at least 136 employees were laid off from id Software. While it is stated that the layoffs affected different teams, it is claimed that a significant portion of the employees worked on id Tech technology. This situation raised concerns that the studio was undergoing a significant change not only in game development but also in its own game engine and technical infrastructure.

id Software stated in its announcement that the staff reduction was not limited to a specific department and that the changes were distributed across teams. Despite this, the studio emphasized that it retained the necessary personnel to develop the games and technologies it is known for. It was also noted that the current team size is similar to the team size when DOOM was developed in 2016.

The company also stated its intention to maintain its long-standing horizontal management approach. In this structure, employees are not limited to managerial roles but directly contribute to the production process. id Software announced that it will remain committed to this work model in the future, where everyone actively participates in game and technology development. Thus, the studio underlined that despite the downsizing, it is not planning a radical change in its production approach.

The final part of the statement emphasized that supporting both remaining employees and those laid off is a priority. id Software announced that it will continue to develop the games and technologies that have defined it for 35 years. The studio’s plans to meet with players at the QuakeCon event in August also indicate that work on future projects has not completely stopped.
