Obsidian May Still be Working on Avowed 2
Following recent claims that Avowed 2 has been cancelled, noteworthy new information has emerged. While it’s been suggested that Obsidian Entertainment is focusing on different projects due to restructuring on the Xbox side, work on the sequel doesn’t seem to have completely stopped. A small development team is reportedly continuing production, hoping the project might be reinstated in the future.
A Small Team Continues Working on Avowed 2
According to the new claim, the small team working on Avowed 2 within Obsidian hasn’t been disbanded yet. Despite the project being officially cancelled, the developers are continuing to advance the sequel until their other assigned tasks are ready. It’s suggested that the studio will focus more on a new Fallout project in the near future. However, since full production on that game might take time, the current team is reportedly continuing work on Avowed 2.
There are claims that Avowed 2’s development process is further along than anticipated. Despite the first game’s recent release, a significant amount of preparation is reportedly underway for the sequel. The team’s goal might be to bring the project close enough to completion to prompt Xbox management to reconsider their decision. This would reduce the remaining development costs, potentially leading to a re-approval of the game.
This approach doesn’t necessarily mean Avowed 2 will definitely return. The continued work on the project simply shows that the development team doesn’t want to completely abandon the game. Xbox management may maintain their decision to cancel based on budget, schedule, and strategic priorities. Therefore, Avowed 2 is not yet an officially announced or re-approved project.
The first Avowed was released on February 18, 2025, for Xbox consoles and PC, and later for PlayStation players. It received generally positive reviews, achieving a score of 80 on Metacritic. It’s unclear whether Obsidian’s efforts to develop a sequel will be successful, but the fact that the small team hasn’t given up on the project suggests that the door isn’t entirely closed for Avowed 2.
