Ebenezer, a reinterpretation of Charles Dickens’ classic *A Christmas Carol*, made its debut. Starring Johnny Depp, the film aims to preserve the familiar narrative while giving the central character a new backstory. The trailer, shown during San Diego Comic-Con, offered the first hints of how the film will blend humor with fantasy elements.
Ebenezer Trailer Shows Johnny Depp’s Return
Johnny Depp reprises his role as Scrooge Ebenezer, a character he has portrayed in various adaptations over the years. The new production will retell the core story of A Christmas Carol while also revealing previously unexplored details about Scrooge’s past. Depp has previously stated that he has had a great interest in the work since childhood and that taking on this iconic role is a significant opportunity for him.
The film marks Johnny Depp’s first major leading role in six years. It will also be his first high-budget film project since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, released in 2018. In the intervening period, Depp appeared in smaller-scale productions, most recently completing filming for Day Drinker, which also starred Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz.
Ebenezer boasts a large cast including Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, and Ian McKellen. Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, and Tramell Tillman will also be featured in various roles. The extensive cast suggests the classic story will be told more comprehensively, not just through Scrooge, but through the contributions of the characters surrounding him.
The film is directed by Ti West, known for Pearl and X, and the screenplay is written by Nathaniel Halpern. Ebenezer aims to reshape the classic Christmas story with a more comedic and modern approach. The first trailer, announced with Johnny Depp’s surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, has heightened anticipation for the actor’s return. The film will be released in theaters on November 13th.
