Killer Inn Failed to Satisfy Players in Early Access

Square Enix’s new IP, Killer Inn, announced at last year’s Summer Game Fest, aimed to make a strong entry into the social deduction genre. However, the early access period, which began on February 12th, has not yet delivered the desired results. Especially considering its multiplayer nature, the first-day performance has raised questions about the game’s future.

Killer Inn Early Access Performance Raises Questions

According to SteamDB data, Killer Inn reached a peak of 813 concurrent players in the first days of early access. This number dropped to around 200 during the day. Moreover, since the game is currently only available through Steam, these figures directly reflect the total player base. For a multiplayer social deduction game, these levels are considered quite low, especially during the launch week.

One interesting point is that the game reached over 1,000 concurrent players during the closed beta. Despite the doors opening to everyone with early access, the drop in player numbers indicates a lack of the expected excitement from the community. The fact that the social deduction genre already has a crowded competitive arena also makes things difficult for Killer Inn.

The review picture isn’t much better. The game currently has a “Mixed” rating on Steam, and more than half of the over 200 user reviews are negative. Players particularly criticize the lack of sufficient communication in matches, the superficiality of the social deduction mechanics, and the imbalance between Wolves and Lambs. Connectivity issues and the “boring” mission design are also prominent complaints.

Although Killer Inn’s early access period is still very new, the initial results show that Square Enix faces a serious test with this new IP. To be successful in the social deduction genre, strong community interaction, balanced role distribution, and a technically flawless experience are essential. If the team can quickly and effectively evaluate player feedback, Killer Inn could gain momentum over time. Otherwise, the momentum missed in early access could determine the game’s fate in the long run.
