Marathon’s PvE Mode Tripled its Player Count in a Short Time

Marathon is trying to regain the community’s interest, which has been declining recently, by offering different content. Bungie’s new mode, available for a limited time, offers an alternative experience that doesn’t focus solely on the game’s competitive nature. Initial data shows that this move has had a significant impact, at least in the short term.

Marathon Regains Interest with PvE Mode

The PvE mode, called Vault Breaker, was made available to players on July 21st. Bungie aims to keep the mode active until August 4th to study player behavior, gather feedback, and obtain data for similar content that may be offered in the future. This experiment, prepared for the extraction shooter Marathon, focuses on players fighting against environmental threats instead of fighting each other.

Marathon's PvE Mode Tripled its Player Count in a Short Time

A day before the mod’s release, Marathon had already reached 5,200 concurrent players on Steam. With the launch of Vault Breaker, this number surged to approximately 15,000 players, nearly tripling the game’s daily peak in just 24 hours. This increase marks the largest player jump seen in Marathon since the start of Season 2 on June 2nd.

The community-organized Revival Week event is also thought to have contributed to the rise. The social media campaign, aimed at encouraging players to return to the game, coincided with the release of Vault Breaker. Therefore, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how much of the increase is due to the new mod and how much is due to the community movement. Nevertheless, it’s clear that the PvE content generated interest and attracted returning players.

The shift towards PvE options in many extraction-type games demonstrates the importance of these mods in reaching a wider audience. Users who don’t want to constantly encounter other players may prefer more controlled PvE experiences. However, it is predicted that the number of players may drop again after Vault Breaker is completed. Whether the threefold increase in Marathon’s numbers will be permanent will depend on Bungie expanding the mode and regularly releasing similar content.
