Naughty Dog Chose The Last of Us Remake Instead of Uncharted

A new claim regarding Naughty Dog’s past projects sheds light on an interesting aspect of the studio’s remake plans. It’s alleged that while serious preparations were made for a remake of the first Uncharted game – a project long awaited by fans – the studio ultimately shifted its focus to The Last of Us. This raises the question of why the studio chose to remake a different classic.

Uncharted Considered Before The Last of Us Remake

According to the claim, Naughty Dog and Sony considered a remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune before The Last of Us remake project. A small test episode may even have been prepared during this process. This test reportedly focused on the scene where Nate and Elena are shot down while flying to the island on Sully’s plane and are forced to parachute out.

It’s claimed that this test was prepared with visuals on par with Uncharted 4 and used to show what the project might look like. Previous claims that some files were found in The Last of Us Part 2 also support this narrative. However, there has been no official confirmation from Naughty Dog regarding this.

The main reason the studio later abandoned this idea is said to be the need for a more comprehensive modernization of the first Uncharted game. While Drake’s Fortune is a beloved title that laid the foundation for the series, adapting its level design, action pace, and set-piece structure to modern standards would have required more work. Therefore, the team may have turned to The Last of Us remake project, which required fewer structural changes.

This claim presents a picture that is both exciting and somewhat bittersweet for Uncharted fans, as it seems Naughty Dog has at least tried to revisit the series in the past. For now, it is unknown whether the Uncharted remake project has been revived. However, the fact that the studio prepared such a test doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of Drake’s Fortune returning with a modern interpretation in the future.
