To Ensure Spider-Man 3 is Complete, There’s Only One Thing Needed
Spider-Man 3 is poised to build upon the strong gameplay foundation Insomniac Games has established, and one of the biggest fan expectations is a rework of the web-slinging mechanic. While the current system is quite fluid and fun, the physics-based freedom of movement found in older Spider-Man games sometimes feels lacking in the newer installments.
How Can Spider-Man 3 Improve the Web-Slinging System?
In Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, traversing Manhattan is truly enjoyable, but much of the movement yields similar results regardless of the player’s speed. The momentum you should gain when jumping from a tall building and launching a web at the last moment isn’t fully maintained. Sometimes, instead of naturally being propelled to the point where the web attaches, the character feels like they’re being pulled by an invisible force.
Spider-Man 2, released for PlayStation 2, placed the laws of physics—mass, velocity, and momentum—at the heart of the gameplay. The direction you threw your web, how fast you flew through the air, and when you released it directly altered your next move. With precise timing, it was possible to shoot upwards, circle a building, or complete a full turn around horizontal structures. This freedom made each glide feel truly different.
The new game doesn’t need to completely abandon the current accessibility. Insomniac could offer an enhanced web-slinging mode for players who want more realistic physics while maintaining the standard control option. Controlling the length of the web, maintaining the connection for as long as desired, and directly converting the fall speed into momentum would make the experience much deeper. A skill-based movement system could transform the city from just a place to traverse.
While Marvel’s Wolverine is currently the studio’s priority project, Spider-Man 3 seems almost inevitable in the future. The series’ combat, open world, and story are already at a strong level. The most important remaining step is to make the player truly feel like they are moving like Spider-Man. Spider-Man 3 could be the most complete game in the series if it adds more physics and freedom to the web-slinging mechanics.
