Only 7% of Developers Support AI content
The use of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry has become one of the most debated topics in recent years. The integration of generative AI tools into areas such as art, voice acting, and content creation raises questions for many developers. New data shared at GDC shows that this gap is much larger than we thought. It seems that AI remains a highly sensitive topic among developers.
Developers Cautious About AI
According to research conducted among GDC attendees, 52% of developers believe that generative AI tools could have negative impacts on the gaming industry. In contrast, only 7% view this technology openly positively. The remaining participants prefer a more cautious approach to the subject.
This situation has particularly surprised technology investors. Moritz Baier-Lentz, who heads the gaming division at Lightspeed Venture Partners, said he was “surprised and saddened” by the lack of adoption of this technology by developers. According to him, many in the industry are demonizing AI more than necessary.
However, developers’ concerns are based on concrete reasons. Recently, we’ve seen some studios criticized for using AI. For example, Embark Studios had to replace the AI-powered voice acting for ARC Raiders with real-life performances after player feedback.
In addition, concerns such as job loss, unauthorized use of artists’ work, and the environmental impact of data centers are also significant parts of the debate. In short, while technology is advancing rapidly, the issue of AI has not yet been fully accepted in the gaming world. It seems that this debate will remain on the industry’s agenda for years to come.
