Resident Evil 1996 Rated
As the original Resident Evil trilogy approaches its 30th anniversary in 2026, fans of the classic games have long wanted to see them ported to modern systems and give players the opportunity to experience survival horror all over again.
New PEGI Rating for the Original Resident Evil
Attentive fans have spotted a new age rating on the PEGI website for the original Resident Evil game from 1996. Interestingly, the rating gives a release date of June 18th, 2024, a date that has now passed with no release and only rated for PC.
In the ‘Brief Summary of the Game’ section of the rating, it states that the rating is for “the PC port of the original Resident Evil game (1996)”. This could just be an update from Capcom; unlike trademarks and copyrights, PEGI ratings do not have to be reapplied for after a certain period of time. The sequels Resident Evil 2 and 3 were ported to the Gamecube in the 2000s and received a PEGI rating at the time. In 2010, this rating was carried over to the PSN versions of the game, and was also carried over to the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game, available as part of PS Plus, along with a new rating for Resident Evil Director’s Cut.
This rating is not related to the Director’s Cut and is specifically stated to be for PC, which raises questions as to what Capcom’s intentions are. Is this just reclassifying an old game? Or are they planning a new version of the game? Fans of the classic fixed camera angle games were hoping to see the trilogy ported to modern devices, but that sadly never materialized.
The first three games can be played on PC with fan-made HD mods, but none of them are officially sold on platforms like Steam. It will be interesting to see if any changes are made to Resident Evil 2 and 3’s classification on PC, or if the Resident Evil 1 rating applies to other platforms as well.
