Resident Evil Requiem Gameplay Has Been Divided into Two Parts
Resident Evil Requiem officially confirmed a long-rumored fact with the new trailer released at The Game Awards 2025: Leon Kennedy is confirmed as one of the playable characters. New statements from Capcom reveal that this choice wasn’t just a surprise. The game’s structure aims to combine two distinct experiences while maintaining the series’ classic formula.
Resident Evil Requiem Combines Two Different Experiences
Statements from game director Akifumi Nakanishi indicate that Resident Evil Requiem is taking a more ambitious approach to both narrative and gameplay. Leon and Grace’s stories are clearly distinct not only in terms of narrative but also in terms of gameplay philosophy. This means that two different Resident Evil experiences will be offered within a single game.
Akifumi Nakanishi confirmed that Leon and Grace have “almost equal” playtime. Contrary to previous claims that one character would have significantly shorter playtime than the other, Resident Evil Requiem gives both characters similar weight. According to Nakanishi, this structure is similar to the balance between Chris and Jill in Resident Evil: Revelations.
The main difference between the two characters lies in their gameplay tempo. Leon’s levels are more action-oriented and aggressive, directly inspired by Resident Evil 4. Grace’s gameplay, on the other hand, offers a mystery and suspense-heavy experience reminiscent of Resident Evil 2. This deliberate distinction aims to create a structure that constantly changes the game’s rhythm.
Nakanishi describes this as “the merging of two different types of suspense in one game.” The goal is for the player to experience intense action in one level, followed immediately by a slower, more unsettling atmosphere. According to the director, while these transitions initially seemed risky, they ultimately gave the game a unique tempo.
Although many details about Leon’s gameplay have not yet been shared, even the short scenes shown suggest that the character will have the expected impact. Resident Evil Requiem aims to bring together both classic fans and players who appreciate the modern Resident Evil style with these two different gameplay approaches.
