Saints Row’s Pre-1970s Story was Rejected
The Saints Row series was already going through a difficult period, but recent announcements have further diminished hopes. The 2022 reboot’s failure to create the expected impact and the closure of Volition had effectively put the series on hold. Now, statements from the original game’s design director suggest that a potential return is also on hold for now.
Saints Row Pre-1970s Story Idea on Hold
Chris Stockman, a former key figure in the series’ early days, revealed his desire to bring back Saints Row with a more “grounded” tone. His proposed project focused on a more realistic prequel set in the 1970s. It was thought that this approach could both return the series to its roots and regain the trust lost after the reboot.
However, according to Stockman, this idea was rejected by Embracer. In a statement on Discord, he said the project was “ghosted” and that he believes the series is currently dead. According to him, Embracer has no active plans for the brand and doesn’t want to take risks.
The commercial and critical performance of the Saints Row reboot directly impacted the series’ fate. The closure of Volition after the reboot was one of the strongest signals regarding the brand’s future. A 1970s-themed prequel could have offered a more balanced tonal beginning, but it seems this possibility is not currently on the table.
Of course, in the gaming world, doors are never completely closed. However, looking at the current situation, it seems unlikely that Saints Row will return in the near future. For now, the series seems destined to remain a nostalgic memory for gamers.
