Supergirl Movie Will Be Darker and Harder
While Supergirl has long been portrayed as a more cheerful and hopeful hero in comics, the new adaptation is poised to change this perception. The script, written by Ana Nogueira, paints a very different portrait of Supergirl by focusing on the traumas she has endured.
Supergirl Takes a Darker Tone in the New Film
The film, a joint production of Warner Bros. and DC Studios, casts Kara Zor-El’s sunny and cheerful side aside. Nogueira’s inspiration came from the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. In that story, the character is a tougher, more vulnerable woman who witnesses and bears the burden of the destruction of her planet. The same ethos is reportedly reflected in the film.
DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran see the project as a significant step in rebuilding the DCEU. Gunn described the casting of Milly Alcock as “one of the best castings of my career.” Alcock’s brief appearance in the Superman film has generated considerable excitement among fans.
In the film, Supergirl’s journey transcends a typical heroic tale. She travels the galaxy with Krypto to celebrate her 21st birthday, but this journey turns into a bloody quest for revenge when she meets a young woman named Ruthye. Along the way, she will face formidable foes such as Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, and Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film also stars Milly Alcock, along with Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. DC Studios emphasizes that Supergirl will be central to both the “Superman Saga” and her own journey. All these details show that audiences will encounter a never-before-seen Supergirl story in the film, which will be released on June 26, 2026.
