The Biggest Mystery of the Sega Saturn Has Finally Been Solved

In the mid-1990s, the console world was a veritable battleground. The competition between Sega, Sony, and Nintendo led to constant advancements in hardware power and gaming technology. For years, there was an interesting rumor circulating about the Sega Saturn, which was released at that time: the claim that a special graphics accelerator was being developed for the console.

Secret Graphics Accelerator Plan for Sega Saturn

For years, this remained just a rumor. However, former Sega employee Junichi Naoi confirmed the existence of this mysterious hardware in an interview in Japan. According to Naoi, the project was codenamed “TRIP” within the company and aimed to significantly increase the graphics power of the Sega Saturn.

There was a significant reason behind the development of this hardware. Sega’s arcade system, the Sega Model 3, was far more powerful than the consoles of the time. Games developed for this system couldn’t easily run on the Saturn’s existing hardware. This is where the idea for the TRIP graphics accelerator came about. The planned system would use a Hitachi SH-3 processor-based chip, allowing the console to run more advanced 3D games.

One of the biggest goals of this project was to bring games like Virtua Fighter 3, which had made a big splash in the arcade world, to the Saturn. According to Naoi, the project wasn’t limited to that. A version of Shenmue, a project Sega had planned at the time with considerable ambition, was also envisioned to run on the Saturn. The TRIP accelerator would have made it possible to adapt such large-scale projects to the console.

However, this plan never materialized. When Sega began working on a new generation console, the TRIP project was shelved, and large projects like Shenmue were moved to the new platform. Ultimately, the game was released years later for the Sega Dreamcast. Thus, the mysterious accelerator hardware developed for the Sega Saturn remains one of history’s interesting but unrealized projects.
