The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Had a Short Lifespan
Speclizer’s fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us 2, developed after months of work, was preparing for release this month. In June, they even shared a gameplay video of about 25 minutes, attracting considerable attention. However, according to the developer, Sony Interactive Entertainment intervened and sent a letter requesting that the mod not be released. Thus, the long-awaited project was shelved just a few steps away from release.
The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Blocked by Sony
Speclizer stated on social media that the mod had been in development since January and was planned for release in September. However, they received a letter from Sony requesting that the project not be published. The mod creator stated that they would comply with this request and would focus their future work entirely on their own project.
This decision particularly upset The Last of Us 2 fans, as Naughty Dog had already canceled their official multiplayer project set in the series in 2023. Some developers working on the project had even stated that the game was quite ambitious. Therefore, another door has been closed on the long-awaited multiplayer aspect.
Of course, there’s a small but important detail on the legal side. Some users believe that Speclizer’s decision to offer early access to the mod for a fee via Patreon may have made it easier for Sony to intervene. After all, fan-made projects carry risks even when they’re free, but company lawyers generally appear more quickly once they start generating revenue.
For now, there’s no official indication that the mod will be released in any other way. Speclizer also explicitly states that the project won’t be released. So, it seems that The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mod, despite reaching the point of a very serious gameplay video, has become history before it even reached players.
