The Speedy Gonzales movie is being revived with a new director

Warner Bros. is preparing a standalone animated film for Speedy Gonzales. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has been revived with Jorge R. Gutiérrez in the director’s chair. The film is currently in early development; the cast, story details, and release date have not yet been announced.

Speedy Gonzales Movie Gets a New Interpretation

Speedy Gonzales, one of the most recognizable characters in the Looney Tunes universe for over seventy years, has remained in the memories of generations of viewers as “Mexico’s Fastest Rat.” Known for his intelligence, speed, and energy, the character has appeared mostly in short cameo roles in recent years, remaining in the background in productions such as Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The new film aims to bring the character back to the forefront. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, the project’s lead, plans to reinterpret Speedy Gonzales to appeal to contemporary audiences. Jorge R. Gutiérrez’s unique visual language and cultural narrative style are seen as one of the project’s greatest assets.

Gutiérrez is known in the animation world for works such as The Book of Life, Maya and the Three, and El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. As both a director and writer, he has created narratives centered on Latin culture, and it is expected that he will bring a similar warmth and depth to the Speedy Gonzales character. A statement from Warner Bros. emphasized that the director’s vision will make the character “timeless yet contemporary.”

This isn’t actually Speedy Gonzales’ first solo film attempt. In 2016, a project involving Eugenio Derbez was considered but shelved due to political sensitivities. It remains to be seen how the new version will address these controversies, but the studio’s decision to revive the project has already generated excitement among Looney Tunes fans.
