Those who join ARC Raiders later earn more

ARC Raiders has been sparking debate with its gameplay choices since its release. While some players argue that joining raids late negatively impacts the experience, the development team emphasizes that this system is a conscious design choice. In fact, according to their statements, late-joining players are said to have a much greater advantage than some might think.

Late Joining in ARC Raiders is a Conscious Design Choice

ARC Raiders takes a different approach from the classic “fully populated lobby” concept by allowing players to join raids 10-15 minutes late. The main purpose behind this system is to prevent maps from emptying out quickly. The development team states that if everyone joins at the same time, half of the raids result in almost completely deserted maps.

However, this situation can be frustrating, especially for players who enter the game with a specific objective. In scenarios where even going from one end of the map to the other takes considerable time, joining late can almost create a feeling of a “wasted raid.” Aware of this perception, the team says they closely monitor player feedback.

Virgin Watkins from Embark Studios’ design team pointed out an interesting detail in an interview. According to Watkins, data shows that players who join late are much more economically profitable. Contrary to what players think, the perception of “loot running out” is not true.

Late-joining players enter a calmer raid where most of the fighting has already taken place. This offers the chance to benefit from dead enemies, shattered ARCs, and leftover loot without risk. Less fighting means more free movement and, indirectly, more stable earnings.

Watkins says this system forces players to change their plans instantly. If the main objective is no longer possible, switching to alternative objectives is seen as part of the game’s core philosophy. Loot placement and spawn points on the maps are designed accordingly.

Emberk Studios acknowledges that late entry is still a “pain point.” They state that they are working on new solutions, especially for players who enter with a specific quest but fail to complete it. However, according to the development team, the current system isn’t a disadvantage as it’s perceived to be; when played correctly, it represents a significant opportunity for latecomers.
