V for Vendetta HBO Series On The Way
The slogan “Remember, remember, the fifth of November…” is poised to resonate again. Alan Moore’s legendary comic book V for Vendetta is being adapted for television, this time by HBO. According to Variety, Pete Jackson, known for his work on the Somewhere Boy series, will write the script. DC Studios co-presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran are also executive producers.
V for Vendetta to Be Re-Adapted
The series is being developed by Warner Bros. Television Studios UK and includes Ben Stephenson (Poison Pen) and Leanne Klein (Wall to Wall Media). This team aims to maintain the political tone of the original while adapting V for Vendetta for the modern era. As with Watchmen, HBO plans to add a darker dimension to Alan Moore’s universe.
The original, published in 1982, is set in a dystopian Britain ruled by the fascist Norsefire party. The mysterious anarchist V, wearing a Guy Fawkes-inspired mask, wages war against the government, crossing paths with a young woman named Evey Hammond. Alan Moore described the origins of this idea in a 2000 interview:
“Initially, we wanted to create a romantic noir hero, but as the story progressed, we realized it was evolving into a world of ideas depicting the conflict between anarchy and fascism.”
V for Vendetta, previously adapted for the big screen in 2005, attracted attention for the performances of Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. While it was a moderate success at the box office, it gained significant momentum in DVD sales. However, some fans found it lacking because it failed to fully capture the comic’s deeply political undertones.
A planned series adaptation for Channel 4 in 2017 was canceled. Now, HBO’s strong production team is offering the opportunity to reintroduce V for Vendetta to modern audiences. It hasn’t been announced yet whether the series will be a direct retelling or a Watchmen-style sequel, but the project has already generated significant interest.
