Why Is Grace Different in Resident Evil Requiem?
With Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom introduces a new main character to the series: Grace Ashcroft. According to producer Masato Kumazawa, Grace is a significant departure from previous Resident Evil protagonists. The game’s atmosphere is built around players experiencing fear more intensely alongside Grace.
Grace Ashcroft Stands Out as a Unique Protagonist in Resident Evil Requiem
Kumazawa states that Grace is the character in the series most easily caught in fear and most affected by the atmosphere. The goal is for players to experience fear alongside Grace and experience the atmosphere through her eyes. Grace’s role as an FBI analyst makes her more familiar with weapons. However, she is not a professional warrior like Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy. Therefore, the game maintains a sense of limited resources, and players are expected to survive with the means at hand.
Grace’s ordinary nature has been compared to Ethan Winters. Kumazawa states that Ethan is the most ordinary character in the series, while Grace is slightly more accustomed to using guns. This approach allows the game to hew more closely to classic survival horror elements. However, Requiem will also feature new weapons and gameplay elements, adding modern touches to the classic structure.
One of the most striking aspects of Resident Evil Requiem is that it offers players the experience of fighting with limited resources. Grace’s lack of expertise makes each encounter more tense and risky. This, in turn, enhances the game’s atmosphere of dread. Players will feel the tension intensify with each step as they try to survive with limited ammunition and equipment.
The developers have announced that at least one downloadable content (DLC) is planned for the game, and that sales are expected to be higher than Resident Evil Village. Grace Ashcroft’s unique character is the key element that distinguishes Requiem from previous games in the series.
