World War 3 was Permanently Shut Down After Eight Years
World War 3 has bid farewell to players after an adventure lasting nearly eight years. While the free-to-play tactical shooter never achieved massive success, it managed to build a small, loyal community. Unfortunately, with the servers shut down, there’s no way to go back or experience the game solo, as it was only playable online.
World War 3 Servers Permanently Shut Down
First released in early access in 2018, World War 3 went through a long and rather problematic development period before finally reaching its full release in 2022. New Generation Games and Wishlist Games announced the end of support on June 3rd. With the arrival of that date, the servers were shut down worldwide, and the game is no longer playable.
The development team stated that the decision was not easy and thanked everyone who had tried the game, sent feedback, reported issues, and created content over the years. Reactions from the community were quite mixed. Some players believed the project had serious potential, while others argued that delayed updates and unfulfilled promises had ended the game much sooner.
World War 3 reached its peak on Steam with approximately 12,000 concurrent players. This peak was seen in 2022, the year the full version was released. However, in the last two years, the number of players rarely exceeded 300. Online users remained in double digits just hours before the servers shut down. Maintaining this level of activity, even for a free game, was frankly unsustainable.
Nevertheless, the complete disappearance of a game in this way is heartbreaking. A production built over years of work became inaccessible the moment the servers shut down. Furthermore, the offline mode and community server options were also discontinued. The closure of World War 3 has brought the debate about the preservation of digital games back to the forefront and has become a bittersweet farewell for its small but loyal community.
