According to Epic’s CEO, AI Could have Saved Destiny 2
Following the end of Destiny 2, the future of the series continues to be debated in the gaming world. While Bungie’s layoffs and the project’s closure remain a topic of discussion, this time a noteworthy statement came from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. According to Sweeney, Destiny 2 could have achieved a much more successful economic performance if it had utilized artificial intelligence more in content creation.
Sweeney’s Statement on AI for Destiny 2 Sparks Controversy
In his statement, Tim Sweeney said that one of Destiny 2’s biggest problems was that constantly creating new content was becoming increasingly expensive. According to him, Bungie could have developed more content at a much lower cost by utilizing AI technologies, thus increasing the game’s revenue. Sweeney believes this approach could provide a significant advantage for games with a live service model.
This statement has sparked diverse reactions within the gaming community. Previously, Bungie employees had stated that the studio’s problems stemmed more from management decisions than technology. Therefore, some players argue that AI alone cannot change the fate of Destiny 2, while others believe it could significantly contribute to reducing development costs.
On the other hand, Epic Games’ recent approach to AI is also noteworthy. While the company laid off a significant number of employees this year, it has frequently emphasized that AI will make production processes more efficient. Similarly, Sony views AI as a crucial part of its long-term strategy. Therefore, Sweeney’s statement could open up new discussions, particularly regarding live service projects under the PlayStation umbrella.
Currently, there is no official development process for Destiny 3. Moreover, previous claims suggested that a potential sequel could require a budget of approximately $500 million. With Marathon also falling short of expectations, the question of whether Sony will make more use of AI in live service games in the future remains a topic of discussion. However, Tim Sweeney’s assessment is a personal opinion, and neither Bungie nor Sony has made an official statement on this matter.
