According to Rockstar’s Founder, Physical Games Shouldn’t Disappear
Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser weighed in on the growing debate in the gaming industry regarding physical versus digital distribution. While acknowledging the significant advantages digital releases offer developers, Houser emphasized that users who prefer physical copies shouldn’t be ignored. According to the experienced game writer and producer, companies should continue offering physical options as long as there is sufficient demand.
Rockstar Founder Wants Physical Game Demand Met
Dan Houser stated that he personally loves physical media but doesn’t see the industry’s shift to digital as a major problem for him. However, he argued that companies should consider the demand for physical copies from gamers. According to Houser, if a significant portion of consumers want to continue buying physical games, publishers should focus on producing games according to demand rather than completely eliminating this option.
The debate over physical games flared up again after Sony announced plans to end disc production for new PlayStation titles by 2028. The increasing prevalence of digital sales and the resulting decrease in production and distribution costs are making it easier for companies to shift to this model. However, disc versions remain a significant option for collectors, secondhand users, and players with limited internet access.
One of the biggest criticisms of digital games concerns whether users actually own the content they purchase. Games in digital stores are often offered as a revocable license rather than permanent ownership. The possibility of losing access if the service is shut down, the account is blocked, or licensing agreements change causes players to worry about digital ownership.
Houser also acknowledged the significant advantages of digital distribution. Regular updates, bug fixes, and new content after release can improve the quality of modern titles. However, the existence of updates doesn’t necessitate the complete elimination of physical versions. The approach of Rockstar’s former founder is based on the idea that instead of the industry merging into a single model, it should offer physical and digital options together, tailored to players’ preferences.
