Active Matter Extraction Shooter Will Make Its Mark on the Genre

Active Matter is a new extraction shooter developed by Matter Team, which reached version 1.0 on September 15th after several years of testing. Playable on PC and consoles, the game combines ideas reminiscent of Escape from Tarkov, STALKER, and Control into a single structure. While it hasn’t yet experienced a huge player explosion, the amount of content it offers, its variable maps, and PvE and PvPvE options create a very extensive package for fans of the genre.

Active Matter Expands the Extraction Shooter Formula

In the game, you control an operator working in a world trapped in a time loop. Regions shaped by quantum distortions are filled with anomalies, post-apocalyptic landscapes, and unusual enemies. Map conditions constantly change, and day-night cycles and special events prevent each raid from progressing in the same way.

The progression system is also quite layered. You can unlock “body sleeve” characters with different abilities and attributes, customize them, and perform actions such as crafting and upgrading weapons, choosing missions, and managing resources in your base area. Raids have main, operational, and secondary objectives; successful exits reward you with new equipment and progression resources.

The game doesn’t just rely on PvPvE. PvE missions, raid content, team-based modes, and classic PvP arenas are also available. The vehicle system, skill tree, prestige structure, daily objectives, and different in-game currencies further increase the depth. The price is that new players will encounter a bit too much information in the first few hours.

Active Matter is currently sold in three different editions starting at $29.99, and the development team says they don’t plan to add microtransactions. Some technical issues and complex systems may not appeal to everyone, but for those looking for something different within the genre, the game has become a serious alternative with its strong atmosphere and rich content.
