CDPR has Given the Green Light to a New Cyberpunk Edgerunners Spin-off Game

Cyberpunk may be poised to grow not only with its main games but also with spin-off projects branching out into different genres. According to newly revealed information, CD Projekt Red worked with an independent studio on a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners-based game. However, the use of the past tense in the description of the project raises a significant question mark regarding whether the game is still in development.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners Game Could Be a 2.5D Brawler

According to information in a developer’s resume, CD Projekt Red worked with WayForward, known for the Shantae and River City Girls series, on a Cyberpunk project codenamed “Gemini.” The research and development process for the game took place between 2025 and 2026. These dates may not necessarily mean the game was cancelled; it could simply be the period when the developer left the studio.

The project is reportedly designed as a 2.5D fighting game, quite different from the main Cyberpunk games. It’s possible that players will control Edgerunners characters in a River City Girls-like structure. The phrases “online gameplay” and “rollback network code” also suggest that multiplayer modes are being considered. Such a structure would open up a completely new avenue for the series, one that hasn’t been explored before.

Given the immense popularity of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it wouldn’t be surprising if David, Lucy, and the team became playable characters. Anime characters have been used in collaborations in other games before. A game built on fast-paced combat, close-quarters fighting, and teamwork would certainly fit the energy of Edgerunners very well.

CD Projekt Red has been working more with external studios in recent years to keep its brand alive. The remake of the first The Witcher game was entrusted to Fool’s Theory, while Virtuos provided support for Cyberpunk 2077 updates. While the fate of the Cyberpunk spin-off is currently uncertain, it appears CDPR seriously considered, at least at one point, turning the Edgerunners universe into a standalone game.
