Even the Author of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Didn’t Expect the Game to be Such a Hit

While narrative-driven RPGs have seen a resurgence in recent years, Expedition 33 has become one of the most notable examples of this trend. However, it seems even the development team didn’t fully foresee the game reaching this point. The interest shown by the player community, in particular, has pushed the project far beyond expectations.

Expedition 33 Exceeds Expectations

The game’s lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, openly states that their expectations were quite modest at the very beginning of the process. The team’s only wish was for the game to be loved by “some players.” However, it’s easy to see that this goal has been far exceeded. The player base the game has captured has surpassed a classic success story.

One of the most striking aspects of this success is the community that has formed. Cosplay creations, detailed fan art, and content exploring the game’s story from different perspectives demonstrate that Expedition 33 has transcended being just a game to become a culture. Even discussions about story endings proceed in a respectful and productive manner, highlighting a rare community dynamic.

Shala Nyx, who brought the character Sciel to life in the game, similarly expresses her surprise at this impact. She summarizes the game’s reception at music events and community gatherings with the words, “It’s wonderful to be a part of it.” Such feedback reveals that the game stands out not only for its sales figures but also for the connection it has created.

The picture is no different on the awards side. Expedition 33 won significant awards at the BAFTA Games Awards, making headlines in many categories, including Game of the Year. Winning hundreds of “Game of the Year” awards clearly shows that this success is no coincidence. It seems that Expedition 33 not only had a great start, but also managed to leave a lasting impression.
