Destiny Infinity Plans Revealed
Destiny Infinity has emerged as one of the plans considered within Bungie for the future of Destiny 2, but never implemented. According to new claims, instead of completely ending Destiny 2, the studio considered rebooting the game under a different name and with a new live service model. However, Destiny Infinity, like Destiny 3, did not receive approval, and ultimately the decision to end support for Destiny 2 prevailed.
Destiny Infinity Could Have Been a New Beginning for Destiny 2
According to the new report, Bungie discussed returning Destiny 2 to a single annual expansion model and repositioning the game as Destiny Infinity. This plan aimed to create a more structured, sustainable, and player-attracting live service formula without completely eliminating the current looter-shooter structure. However, this idea did not receive the green light from the studio and Sony.
Destiny 3 was also on the table, but it’s reportedly stalled due to its massive cost. Previous rumors suggested Destiny 3 could require a budget exceeding $500 million, excluding marketing and post-launch support. This, combined with PlayStation’s recent cautious approach to live service projects, seems to have made launching a new main game extremely difficult for Bungie.
The decline of Destiny 2 may have been particularly influenced by The Edge of Fate and the subsequent Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion failing to meet expectations. According to the report, The Edge of Fate was weak in terms of sales and player retention, while Renegades performed even worse, raising alarm bells within Bungie. This process has created serious questions about the sustainability of Destiny 2.
The community, however, doesn’t seem ready to abandon the series. A petition for Destiny 3 is said to have garnered nearly 290,000 signatures. Furthermore, players are reportedly planning a mass login to Destiny 2 on June 9th to send a message. However, according to insider information, these efforts are unlikely to change the decision. Destiny Infinity might have been a way out, but for now, Destiny’s future seems to depend on Marathon’s performance and Bungie’s next moves.
