Doom Animator’s First Indie Game: High Fructose

The transition from major projects to the independent scene in the gaming world has added another story. Christopher Cantero, who worked as an animator on titles like Doom, Doom Eternal, and Smite, made his debut with his first indie game, High Fructose. The product of a single-person development process, the game quickly garnered attention with its stylized world and fast-paced gameplay.

High Fructose: A Wild Roguelite Experience from a Solo Developer

High Fructose is a first-person roguelite game where a ninja fox battles demonic fruits. The game aims for fast-paced, flow-state gameplay combined with classic survival mechanics. Movement options like wall-running, air-dash, double-jumping, and slow-motion keep combat consistently fluid. The player uses only one manual weapon, while other attacks and abilities are activated automatically.

According to Cantero, the creation of High Fructose is directly linked to his departure from Unity in 2024. Cantero, who used the severance pay he received after his layoff to create his own game, developed the project largely solo. The individual effort evident in many areas, from the game engine to the animations, is one of the elements that distinguishes High Fructose from typical indie projects.

On the gameplay front, each run aims to offer a unique experience with randomly generated battlegrounds. Mutated demonic fruits, which act as enemies, pose different threats in each wave. The recipe system is one of the game’s most striking aspects. Players can acquire power-ups like healing, shields, explosions, or summoning creatures through recipes, and permanent progress is maintained between runs.

High Fructose is currently available for PC via Steam. The developer has stated that an Xbox version is planned for the future, but no specific date has been released yet. This journey from Doom to the indie scene makes High Fructose an interesting option, especially for players who enjoy fast-paced and chaotic roguelite experiences.
