Fallen Developer Gen AI Responds to Criticisms

The Fallen trailer, which has been rapidly spreading on social media in recent days, has garnered attention more for its production methods than for the game itself. The action-adventure title received harsh criticism due to the prominent use of generative AI seen in the trailer. Following the backlash, the development team released a comprehensive statement on the matter.

How Deep is the Use of AI in Fallen?

Fallen is presented as a project inspired by titles like Hyper Light Drifter and Death’s Door, but shaping its narrative with a more “sacred text” theme. While the game’s developer, Superboo Studios, openly acknowledges the use of generative AI, they argue that its scope has been misunderstood.

Brooke Burgess, the studio’s founder and game director, states that some of the content seen in the trailer is actually a “tonal presentation” from the early development process. According to Burgess, this video was not intended as a final trailer, but rather a draft prepared for meetings with investors. Some of the 2D visuals and interface elements in the video were merely temporary tests.

Burges emphasizes that the game’s core elements—gameplay, environmental design, cinematics, and combat systems—are entirely hand-crafted and run in real-time. She specifically mentions that language models were not used in the writing process, and that the voice acting and sound design were also produced originally.

The controversy was sparked by the trailer being presented as an “official announcement” on IGN’s YouTube channel. This led to viewers mistaking the footage, taken out of context, for the final product. Burgess says this lack of context is the root cause of the confusion.

Following this, criticism isn’t limited to the trailer. Project files for Fallen submitted to publishers also contain AI-generated visuals. The studio explains this approach by citing budget constraints, stating that it positions AI not as a “replacement for creativity,” but as a supporting element that accelerates the development process.
