Former Xbox Employees: Layoffs May Be Retaliatory

Xbox is once again at the center of controversy with news of new mass layoffs. According to Game Developer’s interviews with former employees, some argue that past workforce reductions were not simply cost or restructuring decisions. Allegedly, some employees who complained to human resources, testified in workplace investigations, or criticized management were subsequently fired, placed on performance improvement plans, or forced to leave the company.

Claims from Former Xbox Employees Attract Attention

Some former Xbox employees are warning current employees to keep their correspondence, complaint records, and official documents safe before any potential new cuts. One of those who spoke publicly is Glenn Israel, former art director of Halo Studios. Israel has previously criticized studio management for alleged harassment and retaliation.

Former Xbox Employees: Layoffs May Be Retaliatory

According to Israel, employees should seek legal advice and at least obtain assurances regarding document retention before signing termination papers. Citing his own experience, Israel claims he held multiple management roles simultaneously at Halo Studios, received a special service award, but was later fired because his position was deemed no longer necessary.

Anonymous former employees included in the report shared similar examples. One source said they were included in a large wave of layoffs after testifying in an investigation into a manager accused of mistreating employees in meetings. Another former employee claimed they were placed on a performance plan for “disrespect” after disagreeing with their manager, and that their complaints to human resources were ignored.

Microsoft did not comment before the report was published. Therefore, it is unclear how the company will respond to the allegations. However, with rumors of further layoffs and studio closures circulating on the Xbox side, these former employee accounts make the process even more sensitive. If the allegations are confirmed, the discussion could extend beyond restructuring to include work culture and employee safety.
