Halo Campaign Evolved Did Not Receive the Expected Interest on PS5
Despite bringing one of Xbox’s most established brands to PlayStation players for the first time, Halo Campaign Evolved didn’t get off to a strong start. Shared user data shows that while the game still has a significant following on Xbox, a large portion of PS5 owners remain hesitant. The loss of the series’ former strength and its inability to create the same impact among new generation players may be one of the main reasons behind this result.
Halo Campaign Evolved Struggles to Reach PS5 Players
According to Circana’s Player Engagement Tracking data, Halo Campaign Evolved ranked fourth in daily active users on Xbox platforms in the US on July 28th. On that day, approximately 8% of Xbox players ran the game. On Steam, it reached 2% of active users, placing it 14th. The picture was much weaker on PlayStation; the game only had a 1% share, placing it 29th.
Playtime figures show that console users who tried the game weren’t entirely uninterested. Average players on Xbox and PlayStation spent over two hours in the game on the specified day. Steam users’ average time was just over an hour. So, the real problem on the PS5 seems to be not so much that people quit immediately after trying the game, but rather that a sufficiently large audience hasn’t started playing it yet.
Halo’s arrival on PlayStation a few years ago could have been a much bigger event. However, the series has long been overshadowed by titles like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Apex Legends. The search for identity that began with Halo 4, Halo 5’s marginalization of Master Chief, and Infinite’s lack of content weakened the brand’s former impact. A significant portion of the new generation of gamers grew up without a strong connection to Halo.
Moreover, Halo Campaign Evolved’s focus solely on the story experience and its lack of a multiplayer mode may have also limited interest. For PS5 users, paying full price for a controversial remake of an unfamiliar series may not have seemed very appealing. Although the data only reflects US results for a single day, it seems Halo Campaign Evolved has yet to live up to expectations in its first major test on PlayStation.
