Halo Studios has Switched to Activision for the New Halo Game

Activision is preparing to take on a much larger responsibility as part of Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring of its gaming division. One of the teams moving under its umbrella will shape the future of one of Xbox’s most established brands. Furthermore, it has been announced that a new development team, created specifically for this project and independent of the existing team, will be established for the next game. This change is also part of a new wave of layoffs affecting hundreds of employees.

Activision will Lead the Development Process of the New Halo Game

According to Microsoft’s newly announced structure, Halo Studios will now operate under the Activision umbrella. The next game in the series will also be developed by a new team created specifically for this project, separate from the Call of Duty development teams. So, while Activision will take over management, this doesn’t mean the new Halo game will be developed directly by Call of Duty studios.

Halo Studios has Switched to Activision for the New Halo Game

A smaller team within Halo Studios will continue to support existing games and the community. Beyond that, it appears the studio’s former structure will be significantly downsized. Microsoft’s announcement that it will eliminate 268 positions during the same period indicates that this transition is more than just a managerial name change.

The Halo brand has struggled to build a stable player base, especially after Halo Infinite. 343 Industries, which changed its name to Halo Studios in October 2024, both revamped its studio identity and signaled a change in its development approach to the series. Now, with management passing to Activision, this transformation is being taken to a much more advanced level.

There are no official details yet about the new Halo project that Activision will manage. The game’s name, release date, or structure have not been announced. However, the fact that the new team will be formed solely for this project clearly shows that Microsoft is experimenting with a different development model for the future of the series.
