The First Film Changed the Fate of the Sonic Series
Throughout its 35-year history, Sonic has experienced both highly successful periods and challenging years for Sega. Takashi Iizuka, a longtime figure in the series, revealed that during a difficult period in the 2010s, company management considered completely ending the Sonic franchise. According to Iizuka, while he struggled within the company to keep the brand alive, the real turning point was the release of the first Sonic film in 2020.
The Success of the First Film Revived the Sonic Series
Iizuka, who has worked at Sega since 1992 and has been involved in many games in the series since Sonic 2, explained that during one of the brand’s worst periods, he heard from upper management that the entire series should be canceled. While he didn’t specify the year, it seems this coincided with Sonic’s troubled years in the 2010s.
Following games like Sonic Boom and Sonic Lost World, questions arose about the future of the series. While the positive reviews of Sonic Mania gave the brand some breathing room, Iizuka openly states that the biggest turning point for him was the first movie. The film’s box office success drastically changed Sega’s perspective on Sonic.
Interestingly, the first Sonic movie itself went through a rather difficult process. Sonic’s initial character design received significant backlash, leading to the film being delayed and the character completely redesigned. The success of the new design paved the way for sequels, and Sonic managed to establish his own cinematic series.
Today, there are three Sonic films, and a fourth is planned for release in February 2027. The series also continues its journey in the gaming world. According to Iizuka, the success of the first film not only made new cinematic productions possible; it also completely changed the future of the Sonic brand, which Sega had considered abandoning at one point.
