James Gunn Working on 5 DC Projects

James Gunn, who continues to direct both the film and television production sides of DC Studios as the head of the franchise, announced on social media that he is currently working on five active DC projects. Gunn, who established the architecture of the new DCU after Superman, explained that his daily schedule “doesn’t have a typical day,” and that he juggles projects in various stages of production. These projects involve a busy schedule, including storyboard preparation, casting, script notes, previews of first cuts, and marketing meetings.

Man of Tomorrow (Superman 2)

The project that has taken up the majority of Gunn’s time is Man of Tomorrow, set for a 2027 release. James Gunn is back in the writer and director’s chair, making it crucial for the entire DCU. Gunn announced that storyboards have reached countless pages and the film’s fourth draft is complete. Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

Supergirl

Supergirl, which will be released in 2026, is not directly directed by Gunn, but it is under his creative control. Gunn stated that he oversaw early cuts of the film and actively guided the marketing process. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the series will be the DCU’s second feature film and will expand the Superman universe.

Lanterns

HBO’s Lanterns series is one of the DCU’s most important TV projects. The series, which promises a True Detective-like tone, has completed filming, and Gunn is currently reviewing the edits of the submitted episodes. The series is scheduled to premiere in summer 2026 and will be one of the works that shape the cosmic direction of the DCU.

The Batman 2

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman 2 is an “Elseworlds” project, taking place outside the main DCU. Gunn is not directly involved in the creative process, but he has stated that he has provided notes on drafts of the script and provided support to the team. The film is set to begin filming in 2026 and will continue Reeves’s standalone Gotham story.

Clayface

One project Gunn says he’s particularly interested in is the Clayface film, written by Mike Flanagan. Gunn stated that they are currently “waiting for the first cut” for the film, which will be the DCU’s first true attempt at horror. Scheduled for release on September 11, 2026, the film will be the first major test of the DCU’s promise of genre diversity.
