A Fan Remade Toy Story 2 in UE5
While many older licensed games have been forgotten over the years, Toy Story 2 continues to gain fans across generations. So, the fact that a group of fans spent 600 days remaking the first three episodes of Toy Story 2 in Unreal Engine 5 naturally excited nostalgia enthusiasts. However, despite the amazing results, copyright restrictions mean we will likely never get the chance to play this fan-made Toy Story 2 project.
Toy Story 2 UE5 Remake Fan Project Completed But Unplayable
The Toy Story 2 remake project is the result of nearly two years of intense work by YouTuber Level reDesign and volunteer developers. The team used 322 custom models, 192 blueprints, and 40 hours of baking for various costumes and lighting to faithfully recreate the iconic first three episodes of Toy Story 2. The result is a work that replicates the Toy Story 2 experience fans envisioned with modern graphics.
The detailed environments offered by this remake, particularly in Andy’s Neighborhood, demonstrate just how realistic the long-awaited dream of a remake for Toy Story 2 fans can be. Thanks to the lighting and environmental details offered by UE5, Toy Story 2’s platforming experience takes on the appearance of a modern AAA game.
However, the description of the Toy Story 2 remake video clearly states: The project is solely for “education and entertainment purposes.” This means that a UE5 version of Toy Story 2 cannot be released without official approval from Disney or the relevant rights holders. Just like the Hit & Run fan remake, this project will remain a work we will simply watch.
Despite all these limitations, the UE5 remake of Toy Story 2 is a success that has inspired both nostalgia enthusiasts and game development enthusiasts. The fact that Disney recognized this demand and considered an official Toy Story 2 remake is now more meaningful than ever.
