Japanese Game Developers Earned Well in 2025
While the gaming world has often been associated with bad news in recent years, new data from Japan paints a more hopeful picture for the sector. Research shared by the Japanese publication Game Makers, based on data from CESA (Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association), reveals that game developers in the country are having a relatively strong year financially in 2025. The report was also covered in the West by Automaton West.
Incomes Increased, Job Changes More Common
According to CESA’s survey of 339 developers, students, and educators, the average annual household income in the Japanese gaming sector has reached approximately $52,500. The average individual income was measured at around $42,300. Considering the cost of living and regional differences, these figures represent a remarkable increase for Japan.
One of the most striking findings of the study was that 77.9% of participants reported receiving a salary increase compared to the previous year. This rate shows that the Japanese game industry has remained relatively stable during a period of global economic downturns.
Another important finding is workforce mobility. 55.2% of those surveyed said they changed jobs at least once during their careers. Considering that staying with the same company for many years is common in Japanese work culture, this rate is considered quite high for the sector.
The data reveals that developers are not only earning better salaries but are also entering a more flexible and dynamic period in their careers. Despite ongoing negative expectations across the sector, it’s safe to say that 2025 will be recorded as one of the rare “good years” for Japanese game developers.
