Level-5 Boss Defends AI in Game Development

While the topic of generative AI in the gaming world is increasingly being debated heatedly, Level-5 has taken a clear stance. The company’s CEO, Akihiro Hino, addressed the anti-AI sentiment in the industry, arguing that when used correctly, this technology can significantly contribute to game development processes. Hino’s statements have reignited the debate as the year draws to a close.

Akihiro Hino also clarified claims circulating in the industry that “a large portion of games are written with AI.” He stated that Level-5 has an unreleased project thematically centered on AI, and that they are consciously experimenting with AI-assisted development in this project. However, he emphasized that this does not mean the company is having AI write the majority of the code in all its games.

According to Hino, AI isn’t yet at the point where it can single-handedly produce 80-90% of games. However, he acknowledged that the time savings it provides cannot be ignored, stating that this technology has the potential to radically change game development times. In the long term, he suggests that large-budget projects could be completed in much shorter periods than they currently take years.

Touching upon copyright and ethical debates, Hino opposed directly equating AI with “plagiarism.” He argued that the problem isn’t the technology itself, but how it’s used. While acknowledging that AI can create problems in the wrong hands, Hino maintained that when used correctly, it can enrich the creative world.

Finally, the Level-5 boss warned that labeling AI as “bad” could slow down technological progress. Hino believes developers and players should view this tool not as a threat, but as a helpful tool supporting creation.
