Marvel’s Wolverine is After Even the Last Penny in Our Pockets

Marvel’s Wolverine, despite being a purely single-player Insomniac Games adventure, has drawn attention due to its inclusion of in-game purchases. This designation, present in the game’s official age rating, initially suggests a microtransaction system. Fortunately, current information indicates that the situation may be much simpler than a store selling extra costumes.

What Will Marvel’s Wolverine In-Game Purchases Be Like?

The game’s ESRB page includes a warning about “in-game purchases” alongside adult content such as violence, dismemberment, nudity, and explicit language. Given that Marvel’s Wolverine is not expected to have a multiplayer mode, this detail naturally caused some confusion. After all, seeing microtransactions in a single-player, story-driven game would likely displease many players.

The most likely explanation is that it’s an upgrade option to the Digital Deluxe version. Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also used the same ESRB designation. However, this didn’t mean that cosmetic items were constantly being sold within the game. Those who purchased the standard edition could access the Digital Deluxe content later by paying for it.

The standard edition of Marvel’s Wolverine is listed on the PlayStation Store for $69.99, while the Digital Deluxe edition is $79.99. There’s also a $10 Digital Deluxe upgrade pack available for standard edition owners. This pack adds the extra content offered in the more expensive version. Therefore, the designation most likely points directly to this upgrade option.

However, neither Sony nor Insomniac Games have yet explicitly confirmed the scope of in-game purchases. The possibility of paying for costumes for Logan later isn’t entirely ruled out, but at this stage, it wouldn’t be accurate to definitively consider it a microtransaction system. Moreover, the game seems poised to offer a rather uncompromising Wolverine experience with its graphic violence and adult tone. Marvel’s Wolverine appears to carry this label more due to the Digital Deluxe upgrade than to the store system itself.
