Development of Counter-Strike 1.6 Remake has been halted

Sad news has arrived regarding the Counter-Strike 1.6 Remake project, which aimed to recreate the legendary FPS experience for modern players. The development of CS: Legacy, which aimed to preserve the classic Counter-Strike spirit while adapting it to modern technology, has been halted.

Why Was the Counter-Strike 1.6 Remake Project Stopped?

CS: Legacy was announced as a remake developed from scratch on the Source 2013 engine, aiming to replicate the feel of Counter-Strike 1.6. The project was being developed by experienced mod developers who previously worked on CSPromod and featured entirely custom game code and assets. The goal was to adapt the nostalgic gameplay to modern systems while maintaining a community-focused structure.

However, the process was directly impacted by Valve’s adoption of a stricter stance on its own branded intellectual property in 2025. The development team stated that they received a warning from within Valve that the Counter-Strike name and brand might no longer be usable without a separate license. All subsequent official attempts to communicate with Valve went unanswered.

Unable to get a clear response from Valve, the team stated that continuing to invest in the project was unsustainable due to the uncertainty. During this process, it was announced that refunds were made to Patreon supporters, the active development of CS: Legacy was completely frozen, and resources were redirected to a new, original FPS project.

The developers stated that they will try to contact Valve one last time, but if they still don’t receive a response, the Counter-Strike 1.6 Remake project will be officially shelved. However, the possibility of restarting development and reopening the project to the community if a positive response is received from Valve has not been completely ruled out.
