According to Firor, the cancellation of Project Blackbird was the biggest turning point he had anticipated in his career. He said that the inability to bring this project, to which he had dedicated years, to life directly influenced his decision to resign.

Project Blackbird was positioned as the studio’s next major MMO after The Elder Scrolls Online. However, the project was shelved in the summer of 2025 due to financial contractions and layoffs. Microsoft’s cost-focused decisions during this period directly impacted the studio’s future.

In his message, Firor particularly emphasized his teammates. Stating that he had worked with many of them for nearly 20 years, Firor said that the cancellation meant the end not just of a project, but of a great deal of effort and a dream. This heartfelt tone resonated widely within the gaming community.

Following the departure, it became clear that Matt Firor hasn’t completely severed ties with the industry. He stated that he shares his experience as a consultant on various projects and is investing in studios he believes will transform the industry in the future.
