Only One of Bungie’s Six Games Survived

Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie aimed to establish it as a major hub for live-service games. However, the end of new content support for Destiny 2, the loss of players in Marathon, and successive layoffs have made the studio’s future quite uncertain. New information reveals just how many projects Bungie was working on simultaneously at one point.

A Large Number of Bungie Projects Canceled

According to recent information from the gaming industry, Bungie was working on five or six different games at one point. However, Destiny 3 was not among them. While most of the projects in development were canceled, the only new project that survived was Project Gummy Bears, which is said to combine MOBA and arena fighting elements.

Interestingly, Project Gummy Bears is no longer being developed by Bungie. The project was transferred to teamLFG within Sony, thus escaping the wave of cancellations. Bungie’s last major direct release was Marathon. Destiny: Rising, however, wasn’t entirely under Bungie’s control, as it was co-developed with NetEase.

Previously revealed that other canceled projects included a 3v3 PvP-focused Destiny game, Destiny Sunspot, and Project Payback, which featured a third-person perspective. Another project, Matter, was also canceled before the Sony acquisition. Despite this, Destiny 3 never entered active development, and it’s suggested Sony was cautious about investing hundreds of millions of dollars in such a project.

Bungie’s current situation doesn’t look very comfortable either. Destiny 2 is currently in maintenance mode, and Marathon’s future may depend on player numbers. The studio’s decision to lay off hundreds of employees in June further exacerbated the situation. Although Project Gummy Bears survived, the real question for Bungie is whether the company can launch another large and sustainable project in the future.
