Sony Aims to Win Over PC Gamers with the PlayStation 6 Handheld Console
Sony is looking for ways to attract gamers who have recently turned to PC gaming back to the PlayStation ecosystem. Statements made by the company during an investor Q&A session indicate that this strategy will not be limited to new consoles. Accessories, exclusive games, and the possibility of portable hardware suggest that Sony is planning a more flexible gaming experience for the next generation.
PlayStation 6 Handheld Console Could Be Sony’s Next Move
Sony Interactive Entertainment President Hideaki Nishino stated that they want to change the perception of PlayStation as a platform solely associated with the living room. To this end, the company is placing more emphasis on peripherals such as monitors, speakers, keyboards, and mice. A 27-inch, PS5-compatible monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate is one example of this approach.
A larger part of this strategy could be the PlayStation 6 handheld console. While the current PS Portal is a device that can stream games from the PS5, it’s not a standalone handheld console. Rumors suggest Sony is considering a more powerful portable device in the next generation, using a custom AMD APU and capable of running games compatible with PS4, PS5, and PS6. However, this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
Sony’s task doesn’t look easy. The portable gaming market is now quite crowded with handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Therefore, simply offering hardware may not be enough. It’s clear the company will also need strong exclusive games and ecosystem advantages to attract players to PlayStation.
At the investor session, Sony acknowledged that while first-party games are a minority of total sales, they are a key factor in drawing players to the PlayStation experience. This suggests that exclusive games could become even more critical in the future. If the PlayStation 6 handheld console does indeed materialize, it could be one of Sony’s most important assets in its plan to win over PC gamers.
