Steam Machine Benchmark Results Worry Gamers
The Steam Machine, Valve’s new hardware move positioned between PC and console, has long been closely followed. While there’s talk of review samples being sent to the press, the first benchmark results that have emerged have somewhat dampened the excitement. Since the price hasn’t been officially announced yet, how the performance results will be evaluated remains unclear for now.
Steam Machine Geekbench Results Fail to Meet Expectations
The new Steam Machine, appearing on Geekbench under the codename Fremont, is listed with a custom processor called AMD Custom CPU 1772. According to the records, the processor offers 6 cores and 12 threads. It also includes 16 MB of L3 cache and a base clock speed of 4.86 GHz. While this configuration looks close to Ryzen 5 on paper, the test results haven’t been very convincing for gamers.
Two benchmark results shared showed the device’s single-core score at 2334 and 2282, and its multi-core score at 7316 and 7392. It’s important to remember that synthetic tests don’t directly reflect real-world gaming performance, but the community found these numbers weak. Many users on Reddit and X commented that the results were low for a device releasing in 2026.
One of the main reasons for the growing concern is the uncertainty surrounding the price. Despite the device’s release being imminent, Valve hasn’t yet announced an official price. Industry commentators suggest the Steam Machine could exceed $1000. If the price does reach that level, gamers will naturally expect more powerful and better-optimized performance.
However, the picture isn’t entirely clear. These results only show the processor side, and gaming performance can change significantly depending on the graphics unit, SteamOS optimization, and developer support. But Valve’s Steam Machine Verified program alone won’t be enough. If the device comes with a high price tag, it will need to appear strong not only in theory but also in real-world performance to convince gamers.
