Console competition has long been shaped by hardware power, price, services, and game libraries. However, new research shows that gamers still look at exclusive games the most when making decisions. This has long been a significant factor in the race between PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo; however, data from 2026 reveals small but noticeable changes in the picture.
Exclusive Games Still Decisive in Console Purchases
According to first-quarter 2026 data shared by Circana, 41% of gamers in the US consider big-budget exclusive games the most important criterion when choosing a console. This rate still tops the list, but it’s a notable 8% decrease compared to last year. So, exclusive games retain their importance, but gamers are now taking other factors such as price, performance, and accessibility into account more.
Secondly, there’s a rather familiar reason: friends and family. According to the research, 38% of gamers make their choices based on which console the people around them are using. This makes sense, especially in terms of multiplayer games, game sharing, and the comfort of staying in the same ecosystem. Even with the increasing popularity of crossplay, players still value being on the same platform with their acquaintances.
This picture can be a bit problematic for Xbox. In recent years, the release of some Xbox games on PlayStation may have weakened the perception of exclusive games. While the release of titles like Forza Horizon on different platforms may generate new revenue in the short term, it risks diminishing the feeling of “a special reason to buy an Xbox.” The decline in hardware revenue and uncertainties on the studio side also make this perception more fragile.
Sony and Nintendo, on the other hand, still have strong brands in the exclusive game market. PlayStation continues to attract players with large, story-driven titles, while Nintendo can reach millions of players with just a few strong series. Therefore, in the console war, the feeling of “I can’t play this game anywhere else” is still as valuable as technical power. It seems that while exclusive games have lost some of their former influence, they still remain one of the biggest advantages when choosing a console.
