Ubisoft is investing in AI despite the game launch crisis
Ubisoft, in a comprehensive company document released today, simultaneously revealed a new wave of crises and its long-term vision. While announcing the cancellation of seven projects, further layoffs, and a radical internal restructuring, Ubisoft’s reaffirmation of its commitment to accelerating investments in generative AI stood out. The company describes this approach as a fundamental part of its transition to a “more agile, more player-centric” structure.
Ubisoft Places AI at the Center of Its Strategy
The document published by Ubisoft clearly states that the new business model will be shaped around open-world games and GaaS (live service) experiences. While emphasizing that this model will be supported by targeted investments and deep specialization, the phrase “accelerated investment in generative AI technologies that directly touch the player” is particularly highlighted. In other words, AI will not only be a background element but will directly impact gameplay and the player experience.
Ubisoft’s interest in AI isn’t new, actually. Last year, the company introduced a research project called “Teammates,” featuring AI-powered characters that can dynamically interact with players. This project was a continuation of earlier “Neo NPC” experiments and gave strong signals about how it could be used, especially in Ubisoft’s massive open worlds. It’s no surprise that the company is integrating these systems into its future games.
However, the timing is quite controversial. With growing backlash against generative AI in the gaming industry, some studios are openly expressing their difficulties in using this technology. Recent reactions from other developers demonstrate how sensitive player communities are to this issue. In this environment, Ubisoft’s decision to “accelerate investment” inevitably sparks new debates.
Despite all this criticism, Ubisoft management doesn’t seem to be backing down. Company CEO Yves Guillemot previously described AI as “as big a revolution for the industry as the transition to 3D.” It remains unclear how this vision will be received in the current crisis environment, but it is now clear that Ubisoft is determined to place artificial intelligence at the center of its games in the coming years.
