Who Will Voice the 1000 NPCs in Fable?

Fable, with its latest gameplay demonstration, has attracted attention not only with its visual world but also with its social systems and NPC structure. Playground Games emphasizes that the characters in Albion will not be just background figures; each will have its own behaviors, reactions, and way of life. Given such a large living population system, one of the most important questions that comes to mind is how these characters will be voiced.

Fable Will Not Use AI for NPC Voice Acting

Playground Games made an important announcement regarding NPC voice acting in Fable during a Q&A session held as part of the Summer Game Fest. The studio confirmed that generative artificial intelligence is not being used for the character voices in the game. According to the statement, approximately 100 players worked with the living population in Albion, and these players recorded numerous dialogues.

This information is particularly noteworthy given the recent surge in AI discussions within the gaming industry. While some studios are turning to AI tools in various areas, from temporary content and cover art to even voice production, Fable seems to have opted for a more traditional approach. Instead of using an automated text-to-speech system for over 1000 NPCs, Playground Games chose to conduct extensive recordings with real voice actors.

The new game features NPCs with different personalities, reactions, and attitudes that change depending on the player’s actions. Therefore, voice acting becomes a critical component of the game’s claim to a living world. Players will be able to form friendships, develop relationships, start families, or negatively impact the lives of those around them in Albion. The characters’ vocal reactions will be crucial in making these decisions feel believable.

With this approach, Fable has moved away from rapid AI-powered production and towards a more labor-intensive but natural voice acting process. This could make Albion feel more alive, more personal, and more responsive. When the game is released on February 23, 2027 for Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC, the hundreds of characters players will encounter will be voiced by real voice actors.
