Why did Nintendo choose the Indie World brand instead of Indie Showcase?

Nintendo’s “Nindie Showcase” presentations, once prominently featured in the Switch ecosystem, served as a significant showcase for independent games. However, this brand quietly disappeared over time, giving way to the Indie World presentations. Information shared by former Nintendo of America employees reveals that this change was driven by a purely strategic, not creative, reason.

Why Did Nintendo Choose the Indie World Brand?

According to former employees Kit and Krysta, the name “Nindie” was originally coined by Nintendo’s publisher and developer relations team and was initially well-received within the company. The combination of the Nintendo brand and the word “indie” aimed to give independent games a warm and welcoming identity. However, this creative approach raised alarm bells in the company’s legal department.

Nintendo’s primary concern was that breaking up the brand name into a new word would weaken intellectual property rights in the long run. According to the legal team, combining “Nintendo” with other words could make future trademark defense more difficult and set precedents in legal disputes. Therefore, it was decided that derivative brands like “Nindie” were unsustainable.

According to information shared in the podcast, an official from the Publisher and Developer Relations team attempted to appeal this decision. However, Nintendo’s strict approach to trademark protection prevailed, and the decision remained unchanged. As a result, the “Nindie” name was shelved, and a more neutral, safer option, the Indie World brand, was adopted.

Today, while Indie World presentations demonstrate Nintendo’s continued support for independent games, the brand language is much more controlled. The name change reflects Nintendo’s sensitivity to protecting its own name, rather than a change in approach to independent developers.
