Xbox Wants to Discover the Next Kojima
Xbox has recently been in the news with both good news and allegations of layoffs, studio closures, and project cancellations. In short, the atmosphere for the brand is a bit mixed. Despite this, there are still those who look to the future of Xbox with hope, and one of them is the company’s new CEO, Asha Sharma. In a comprehensive report prepared by Entertainment Weekly for Xbox’s 25th anniversary, Sharma, while discussing Hideo Kojima’s OD, delivered a rather striking message: The next Kojima of the gaming world may yet to be discovered.
XBOX Wants to Open Up Space for New Creative Names
Hideo Kojima’s OD, developed for Xbox, still largely remains a mystery. What is known about the game is limited, but according to Kojima, the project will stand in a unique place between classic video game architecture and a cinematic experience. The famous game designer says that the idea for OD has been in his mind since the Death Stranding era and that it offers a new game system “that no one has ever seen before.”
According to Kojima, the idea initially seemed too strange for many companies. Both large corporations and emerging companies were wary of OD. However, Xbox opened the door to this unconventional concept. Kojima notes that Phil Spencer, the then-CEO of Xbox, saw the potential in the project. Asha Sharma also describes OD as a “profoundly impactful” game and says the project needed its own niche.
Sharma’s most noteworthy comment, however, concerns the future of Xbox. She believes the gaming world hasn’t yet reached its limits. Therefore, the platform needs to be more open, giving more developers and different game genres a chance to succeed. Sharma implies that Xbox is interested not only in current big names but also in future creators, saying, “the next Kojima is yet to come.”
Of course, these words come at a time when negative news about Xbox is circulating. Therefore, it’s normal for gamers to approach the idea cautiously. However, supporting a risky and experimental project like OD shows that Xbox is still willing to embrace diverse ideas. If Sharma’s vision is truly realized, Xbox could become a launching pad not only for major franchises but also for entirely new creators in the future.
