Zack Snyder Discussed the Batman and Joker Story After Justice League
Zack Snyder has revealed that the post-apocalyptic story at the end of Justice League, where Batman and Joker are on the same side, is actually part of a much larger plan. According to the director, his team had meticulously planned the entire three-film sequel beforehand, and a significant portion of these ideas can be seen in storyboards that have been circulating online for years. Snyder specifically mentions that these materials, including drawings by Jim Lee, largely reveal the events that will unfold in the second and third films.
The Knightmare Storyline Would Expand in Justice League Sequels
According to the storyboards, the sequel centered on the Knightmare timeline, where Darkseid took over Earth. In the Justice League epilogue, Batman is seen as the leader of a small surviving team alongside Joker, Mera, Flash, Cyborg, and Deathstroke. The goal of this alliance was to create one last chance against Superman, who was under Darkseid’s control.
Snyder had previously confirmed that in Justice League 2, Superman would fall under Darkseid’s influence and turn to the dark side. After the world was largely lost, the plan was for Flash to escape the apocalyptic timeline, travel back in time, and warn Batman of the impending catastrophe. This would also provide a clearer continuation of the time travel scene we saw in the first film.
Justice League 3 would tell the final story of this war. According to Snyder’s plan, Batman would sacrifice himself in the final fight against Darkseid, after which the heroes would unite one last time to save the world. The temporary alliance between Batman and the Joker was also designed as part of this larger battle.
Snyder is not giving any indication that these films will be shot today. Instead, he is directing fans to existing storyboards, saying that the outline of the three-film plan can be seen there. While it remains unclear whether the director will return to the Justice League universe, what happens after the truce between Batman and the Joker is no longer entirely unanswered.
