007 First Light Became the Highest-Rated Bond Game in 30 Years

007 First Light seems to have made a very strong comeback for the long-silent James Bond games. Developed by IO Interactive, drawing on their experience with Hitman, this new agent adventure has garnered attention with its review scores. Besides being the first major Bond game in almost 15 years, 007 First Light appears to have recaptured the quality the series has long been yearning for, thanks to its high ratings.

007 First Light Launches a New Era for Bond Games

According to published reviews, 007 First Light achieved a score of 87/100 on Metacritic with 51 official reviews. This result makes it the highest-scoring James Bond game since the legendary GoldenEye 007 released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. While GoldenEye still holds a special place with an average of 96/100, First Light’s strong start is truly great news for Bond fans.

Bond games have had a long and tumultuous history. After 007 Legends in 2012, there hadn’t been a major new game, leaving the future of the series uncertain. Therefore, 007 First Light, developed by IO Interactive, was seen not just as a new game, but as a crucial test to determine if James Bond could make a serious comeback to gaming.

Reviews highlight the game’s action structure, cinematic presentation, and strong agent fantasy elements. IO Interactive’s experience in stealth, mission design, and system-driven gameplay seems to have been naturally adapted to the Bond universe. With this success, it wouldn’t be surprising if 007 First Light were to be among the standout games of 2026 and mentioned in discussions about game of the year.

For now, the outlook looks promising for James Bond games. While 007 First Light may not reach the level of GoldenEye, it represents one of the strongest comebacks in the series in almost 30 years. If this success translates into sales, a new Bond game series could be born from IO Interactive. If Bond is back, this time it seems to be truly licensed, stylish, and action-packed.
